How to Keep Your Kid Calm at the Doctor’s Office

Most kids just don't feel comfortable at the doctors' office. They can start reacting from the moment you get to the parking lot, or it could be a fear of needles. Here are a few things you can do to help during the visit and prepare for it.

Play Pretend

People get upset when they're thrown into a situation without knowing what to expect. For kids, that can be even more agonizing. You can help prepare them by play performing a doctor's exam on a stuffed animal. If they can put themselves in the role of the doctor, then they may understand better what's going on.

Give Support

This can be difficult when faced with emotional outbursts, but it's important to let children know that you understand why they're scared. If you can show that you're on their side, they'll feel safer and more willing to emulate your behavior.

Stay Calm

If you are calm, your kids will emulate you. Try to focus on the situation at hand and not other concerns, like worrying about child's health, that might stress you out. After all, you're at the doctor to get help, and that's a good thing.

Very few kids love going to the doctor, but you can help by calmly supporting them and preparing them for what will happen. If you need to go in for a visit, check out this site for more information about kids urgent care in San Diego.
